Restoration
of mobility is a central focus of rehabilitation. Little systematic research
has however been done. The theoretical importance of a longi
tudinal
research approach is beyond doubt: knowledge today is solely based on
empirical data and cross-sectional training studies in long-term SCI. Such a
longitudinal approach will contribute to the theoretical understanding and
modelling of restoration of mobility and its associations with impairments,
disabilities and handicap.
Objectives
The
hypothesis of the prospective cohort study is that restoration of mobility can
only be successfully attained through specific training and improvement of the
individual physical and physiological characteristics of the
cardio-respiratory and musculo-skeletal systems.
Research Questions

How
does restoration of mobility develop over time during the rehabilitation
process at the level of impairment, disability and handicap? -
How does physical work capacity evolve during rehabilitation?
-
Which changes take place in the cardio-respiratory and musculo-skeletal systems?
-
What are the central practice and training elements within the rehabilitation programme in terms of form, intensity, frequency and duration?
-
To what extent do these training elements relate to common theories on training and work capacity?
-
Are there any associations among the restoration of mobility and the characteristics of the rehabilitation programme, after correction for individual lesion and other subject-related characteristics?
-
To what extent can the restoration of mobility be explained by initial medical, functional-anatomical, mental and social characteristics of the person with SCI at the start of rehabilitation?
-
To what extent is the restoration of mobility instrumental to daily functioning and quality of life?
